One Day in Chennai: An Itinerary from Royapettah

With one day in Chennai, start with Marina Beach, spend the middle of the day at the Government Museum or Fort St George, visit Mylapore in the late afternoon, and end at Express Avenue. Marina is 8 to 10 minutes from Hotel Royal King and Express Avenue 5 to 10 minutes.
How to use this plan
This plan assumes you wake up in Royapettah, have a day, and want to see the best of Chennai without rushing. Opening hours below come from public sources and can change, so confirm before you set off. Where a time could not be verified, the guide says so.
Start early. Chennai is warm for most of the year, and the most comfortable hours are the first and last of the day.
A one-day plan has to be selective. The sights in this plan are on the eastern side of the city, which keeps travel short. If you only have a day for sightseeing before a train or flight, drop the mall and keep the beach and one museum, which gives you a fuller flavour of the city.
Morning: Marina Beach (about 6 AM to 8 AM)
Marina Beach is about 8 to 10 minutes away from Hotel Royal King. Early light and a cooler breeze make this the best time. Do not swim, because the surf is dangerous and there are no lifeguards. A walk along the promenade, with a stop at the lighthouse and Vivekananda House if they are open, makes a nice start.
Breakfast in Triplicane is next. Ratna Cafe on Triplicane High Road, open since 1948, is known for idli sambar.
Plan to leave the hotel by about 6 AM and be back by 8:30 AM for a shower and a change of clothes. If you have your own car, you can leave it at the hotel, which offers free parking, and use an auto for the beach, as parking along the promenade can be difficult at weekends.
Late morning: pick one museum
The Government Museum in Egmore, founded in 1851, has six buildings and about 46 galleries, according to Wikipedia, including a large bronze collection and a children's museum. The Chennai district website lists 9:30 AM to 5 PM. Another travel site mentions a Friday closure, so confirm before you go.
If you prefer history, Fort St George, founded in 1639, has a museum with colonial-era weapons, coins and uniforms, and St Mary's Church, the oldest Anglican church in India. The fort museum is ticketed. Pick one, because doing both rushes the day.
Whichever you choose, carry a photo ID, a bottle of water and some cash. Some areas of the fort are restricted because government offices work there. Allow about two hours for the museum and about the same for the fort.
For a train or flight the same evening, shorten the plan to Marina Beach and one museum, and take your luggage plan seriously. Many travellers keep their bags at the hotel after check-out at 11 AM if the front desk agrees, but that is something to ask in advance.
Afternoon: rest
Return to the hotel in the early afternoon. Check-in is at 1 PM and check-out at 11 AM, so if you are only staying a day, ask the front desk about luggage arrangements. A pause in an air-conditioned room is worth it in summer.
A real rest is important. Even an hour in a cool room, a snack and a charge for your phone makes the evening much more enjoyable. If you are leaving the same day, ask the front desk about check-out arrangements and luggage.
Late afternoon: Mylapore
Mylapore is next door. The Kapaleeshwarar temple reopens in the evening, around 4 PM according to one timing guide, and San Thome Basilica is nearby. Dress modestly and wear footwear that is easy to remove.
Around the temple, small messes serve evening tiffin. Mylai Karpagambal Mess and Rayar's Mess are names from food guides, but check hours.
If you still have energy at the end of the evening, a walk around Royapettah's own streets is worth it. The area has a clock tower from the 1930s and a long history, according to Wikipedia, and it is lively until fairly late. Return to your room before it gets too late, so you are ready for the next day.
Evening: Express Avenue
Express Avenue Mall, about 5 to 10 minutes from the hotel, is open from 10 AM to 10 PM according to its website. It has a food court with about 25 counters and an eight-screen cinema, so it is an easy way to end the day without further travel.
Rooms at Hotel Royal King run from Rs 1,600 for one guest to Rs 3,600 for four, per night. Free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour front desk mean you can return at any time. Message or call Hotel Royal King on +91 73973 96612 with your dates and number of guests. Rates are per room, per night, so please reconfirm the current rate and taxes when you book.
A one-day itinerary works best with a flexible mindset. If the weather turns, replace the beach with the museum and keep the mall as a backup. Chennai's rain can arrive quickly in the monsoon months, so always keep an umbrella in your bag and a plan B in mind.
