Chepauk Stadium: Gates, Parking and What You Can Carry

MA Chidambaram Stadium at Chepauk is reached on foot from Chepauk MRTS station or Government Estate metro, with parking restricted on match days. Rules on bags, phones and bottles change, so read the ticket notice. The stadium is about 8 to 10 minutes from Hotel Royal King.
Where the stadium is
MA Chidambaram Stadium is in Chepauk, close to Marina Beach. According to Wikipedia, its approach roads are Wallajah Road on the north, Bells Road on the west and Victoria Hostel Road on the east. After the 2023 renovations, the capacity is about 38,200. The Anna Pavilion stand and the V. Pattabhiraman gate end are among the named stands.
The stadium is about 8 to 10 minutes from Hotel Royal King. On a match day that figure can stretch a lot, so plan on public transport or an early start.
Chepauk is a historic ground. Wikipedia says it was established in 1916, hosted India's first home Test match in 1934 and saw India's first Test win in 1952, and it has gone through two big renovations, in 2010 to 2011 and in 2021 to 2023. If you are visiting for a Test, an IPL game or a domestic fixture, check the gate printed on your ticket, since entrances are allocated by stand.
Stations near the gates
Wikipedia lists Chepauk MRTS station to the south-east of the stadium and says it is adjacent to the ground, and names Government Estate on the metro Blue Line as the nearest metro access. A police advisory for a 2025 match also recommends both. The MRTS runs from Chennai Beach to Velachery, and Chepauk is the fifth stop from the Beach end.
For getting between Royapettah and either station, an auto is the usual choice. Ask the front desk how far to walk, since no exact walking distance is confirmed here.
Because the stadium is by the sea, the walk from the Chepauk station and from the Marina side can be pleasant on a cool evening, but on a hot afternoon it can feel long. Wear a cap and carry a small bottle in a clear pouch only if the current rules allow it, which is not confirmed here. When in doubt, drink water before you leave the hotel.
Traffic and parking on match days
Chennai police issue diversions for each home match, and the details change. The advisory for the 23 March 2025 match, reported by IANS, said the diversions ran from 5 PM to 11 PM. Private vehicles were directed along Cathedral Road, RK Salai or Kamarajar Salai and told to park on the Marina service road. Taxis and autos used Anna Salai or Wallajah Road for drop-off with parking on Sivananda Salai. Pedestrian access was via Press Club Road, and Bells Road was one-way.
Treat this as an example, not as a standing rule. Check the latest advisory before each match. The simplest approach for a visitor is not to bring a car at all.
Whatever the exact diversions, the general pattern is that private cars are pushed towards the beach service road and Cathedral Road, while autos and cabs are routed to specific drop-off points. Fans on foot are generally steered to a few pedestrian routes. That means a cab ride from the hotel may end some distance from your gate, so budget a walk of ten to twenty minutes and allow it in your timing.
What can you carry?
There is no single permanent rule, so check the notice on your ticket or the organiser's page. For reference, a notice before an April 2018 IPL match, reported by The News Minute, listed bags, laptops, binoculars, bottles, outside food, lighters and musical instruments as prohibited, and said security would frisk everyone and re-entry was not allowed. On match day itself the Chennai Super Kings announced that mobile phones would be allowed.
That shows how much detail can shift between matches. The sensible approach is to carry only your ticket, a phone, a little cash and a small pouch, and leave everything else in your room. The hotel front desk is staffed round the clock, so you can leave bags with the room.
Getting around after the match
Crowds build quickly when the match ends. If you are staying nearby, a short walk away from the stadium before calling a cab usually helps, and the police advisory above notes that MTC ran special buses and free rides for ticket-holders at the 2025 match. Do not count on this being repeated.
If you want a quieter exit, hold back for a while and let the crowd thin before you call a cab.
Tickets, rules and gates change for each series, so the best habit is to read the notice that comes with the ticket and any police advisory published a day or two before the match. Local newspapers have carried these notes in past seasons. Screenshots of your ticket QR code, a charged phone and a printed copy of the entry details are sensible back-ups.
