Chennai Weather by Month: When to Visit and What to Pack

Chennai is warm all year. The most comfortable months are roughly late December to mid March, May is the hottest, and November is the wettest. Pack light cotton, an umbrella and sandals, and check the forecast before you travel.
The short version
Chennai has a tropical climate with high humidity for most of the year. Wikipedia's climate figures give mean daily highs from about 28.9 degrees Celsius in December to 37.1 degrees in May, and an annual rainfall of about 1,408 mm. November is the wettest month at 377 mm on average. WeatherSpark describes late December to mid March as the best window for beach and outdoor activity.
These are averages. A single week can be hotter, wetter or calmer, so look at the forecast a few days ahead.
A rough monthly picture is useful. January and February are the coolest and driest, March is already warm, April to June are hot, July to September are hot with some showers, and October to December carry the northeast monsoon. If you dislike heat and humidity, plan for December to February. If you want the best chance of rain-free beach days, aim for January and February.
January to March
These are the pleasant months. WeatherSpark puts January as the coolest, with typical highs of 84 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit (around 29 to 30 Celsius) in winter and lows around 71 to 73 Fahrenheit. Rain is minimal, with February and March the driest months according to Wikipedia. Pongal falls in mid-January, so hotels fill up around it.
This is the best time for Marina Beach walks, Mylapore temple visits and sightseeing on foot.
Evenings in these months are good for walks along the beach, and the early mornings are the best time for sightseeing on foot. The light is soft, and the heat has not yet built up. Even so, the sun is strong by late morning, so a hat and sunscreen remain sensible all year round.
April to June
Heat builds from April and peaks in May, with a record of 45 degrees Celsius recorded in May 2003. Wikipedia says the hottest stretch is late May to early June, known locally as Agni Nakshatram, with maximums around 38 to 42 degrees. Plan outdoor trips for early morning or evening and use the afternoon for rest.
This is also IPL season at Chepauk in many years, so check the fixtures if you want to avoid or join the crowds. An air-conditioned room is a real comfort in these months, and every room at Hotel Royal King is air conditioned.
If your trip falls in these months, consider a mid-day rest in your room. Hotel Royal King is a short ride from Express Avenue Mall and Marina Beach, and you can go back and forth without losing much of the day. Carry rehydration salts or fruit juice with you, and avoid heavy meals at lunch.
July to September
The southwest monsoon brings smaller amounts of rain from mid-June to mid-September, and Chennai stays hot and humid. WeatherSpark lists summer highs of 92 to 96 Fahrenheit. Showers tend to be short. Carry a compact umbrella and expect high humidity, which means clothes dry slowly.
Humidity is the main discomfort here, not temperature alone, and it means that clothes cling and dry slowly. Cotton and linen are much more comfortable than synthetic fabrics. Quick-dry towels and a spare set of clothes in your day bag are useful if you get caught in a shower.
October to December
Most of Chennai's rain comes from the northeast monsoon between mid-September and mid-December. Wikipedia notes that depressions and cyclones from the Bay of Bengal sometimes hit the city, with flooding in 2015 and 2023. Heavy rain can slow roads and disrupt trains and flights, so build slack into your plans and keep your return travel flexible.
By December the air cools, and the Margazhi music season fills the city with visitors. This is a lovely time if you can handle the occasional wet day.
If a cyclone or depression is forecast, follow advisories from the authorities and the India Meteorological Department, avoid low-lying areas and keep your travel flexible. Tell the hotel your arrival time if your journey is delayed by the weather. A 24-hour front desk means someone can receive you whenever you reach Royapettah.
Packing list
Light cotton clothes, a hat or cap, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and a compact umbrella cover most of the year. Add a light cover-up for temples and for strong air conditioning in malls. Footwear should be easy to slip on and off, and sandals dry faster than shoes after rain.
Keep a waterproof pouch for phones and documents between June and December. Hotel Royal King has free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour front desk, which helps if your plans shift because of weather. Message or call Hotel Royal King on +91 73973 96612 with your dates and number of guests. Rates are per room, per night, so please reconfirm the current rate and taxes when you book.
